Robust industrial memory devices

System-D offers a comprehensive portfolio of industrial storage devices, such as memory cards and solid-state drives (SSDs), as well as RAM modules and memory ICs.

Whenever data need to be stored quickly and reliably (e.g. when storing sensor or video data), and long-term availability of the storage device is required, our industrial flash memories are a perfect fit! SSDs are generally very popular in the industrial world, due to their low power consumption, their resistance to shock and vibration, but also their small physical dimensions.

Typical Applications
  • Automotive
  • Energy
  • Automation
  • Rail and Public Transport
  • Networks and Telecom
  • Aviation and Aerospace
  • Mechanical Engineering

We offer durable and industrial-grade storage devices in various form factors (SD, SDHC, MicroSD, CompactFlash, CFast, USB sticks), capacities (512KB to 128GB) and types (SLC, pSLC - aMLC, MLC, TLC and 3D TLC). Our portfolio includes products from renowned manufacturers such as ATP, Swissbit, Transcend and Exascend. Because flash devices are sometimes exposed to extreme thermal loads, these manufacturers also offer industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C in addition to commercial temperature range of 0°C to +70°C.

NAND-Flash Technology

On SLC cells (Single-Level Cell), only 1 bit is stored per cell. This ensures a long life cycle of the memory device with low power consumption. SSDs with SLC NAND flash are often used for writing-intensive applications, thanks to high reliability and low susceptibility to errors. They are particularly suitable for critical industrial applications where data security is the top priority.

pSLC (also known as iSLC) means pseudo Single-Level Cell and is a technology in which TLC or MLC Nand Flash is written with only 1 bit per cell. SSDs with pSLC NAND flash now have similarly high endurance values to those with SLC, but are significantly cheaper. The high endurance is also achieved by the fact that a multiple of the designated memory is installed as ‘spare blocks’ in the SSDs.

TLC (Triple-Level Cell) are NAND flash memory cells on which 3 bits are stored. TLC memory is currently produced in large quantities worldwide and is therefore very cheap.

With MLC (Multi-Level Cell), 2 bits are stored per cell. The production of MLC NAND is gradually being phased out, meaning that MLC-based storage media should become rarer and more expensive in the long term.

Long service life

Our industrial memory devices are highly reliable. Among other factors, this is a result of their long service life (or the high number of possible write/erase cycles).

The insulation of the flash cells is attacked with every write and erase cycle (P/E cycle). If the insulation layer is worn out, the affected cells are no longer usable. Therefore, any SSD's life span is  limited, in principle.

The TBW value (Total or Tera Bytes Written) according to JEDEC standard JESD-219A (Client Workload) indicates the minimum amount of data in terabytes that can be written to the SSD. The same applies to PBW (Petabytes Written).

The DWPD value (Drive Writes Per Day) indicates how often an SSD can be completely written and deleted per day.

Other factors such as wear levelling, but above all your specific application (write intensity, file sizes, temperatures, operating system used, ...) determine the durability of the SSD. The expected service life of an SSD can be calculated individually.

Fixed BOM

Every storage device has a BOM (Bill of Material). This is the list of all components the SSD is made of.

With a fixed BOM solution, the critical components that the product consists of (controller, flash memory chips, etc...) are set. The production processes of SSDs with a fixed BOM ensure that only the listed components are installed. This means that no differences are to be expected from order to order under a specific article number and compatibility is guaranteed for a long time.

With standard consumer products, on the other hand, the parts list is not fixed. Manufacturers can vary the individual components continuously and at will. The advantages are favourable prices and constant availability. However, there is no continuity, which means that the products can suddenly become incompatible with the applications at any time.
